ESSENTIAL OILS
What
are Essential oils?
A
true essential oil is the volatile (readily
vaporised) liquid component of aromatic plants and trees. They occur in
different parts of the plant depending on the species of plant; leaves,
flowers, seeds, bark, rind etc. These precious essences are commonly collected
by a process of steam distillation of the plant material. Expression (pressing)
of the fruit's rind is the method that is used for citrus oils and certain
fragile scented flower oils must be solvent extracted in order to capture their
fragrances. Solvent extracted essential oils cannot be certified as organic as
a result of the chemical solvents (such as petroleum and hexane) that are used
during the extraction process.
Quality
of Essential Oils
Our
therapeutic grade essential oils are either produced on our farm or sourced
from other certified organic distillers. By knowing the exact source of our
oils, we can be confident that they are 100% pure, certified organic and
unadulterated.
We
distil our own essential oils on site, on the farm, to ensure that the fresh
plant material retains a high level of its natural aromatic oils. Our modern
distillation facility is constructed of food grade stainless steel. This helps
prevent contamination and ensures the volatile organic essential oils maintain
their therapeutic qualities by not reacting with the distillation equipment itself.
We
package our essential oils and aromatherapy products in amber glass bottles to
protect them from UV light, which can degrade the oils.
Selecting
Essential oils for Quality
There
are many producers of essential oils worldwide and many synthetic aromatic
oils, posing as essential oils. The word Lavender, when written on a product
label, can mean a smell or a colour. The scent of lavender can be recreated in
a laboratory and it is this synthetic lavender smell that is used in perfumery
and many commercial skin care and household products. The scent may be similar
but the oil does not contain the therapeutic properties that the species
lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) contains. This is why we always write the
plant species on our essential oil bottles. When we grow a species for its oil
or select an essential oil from a distiller, we look at many aspects of the oil
to ensure its quality and adherence to international standards in therapeutic
grade essential oils.
BIO-TYPE: An essential oil must
come from a defined botanical species as well as a particular genetic strain. e.g.
M. alternifolia.
CHEMO-TYPE: The same botanical
species can often produce completely different chemical constituents in its
essential oil. For example, there are 6 different chemotypes of Thymus vulgaris.
The two most common chemotypes, c.t.Thymol, are located close to the
Mediterranean sea at low altitude, whereas Thymus vulgaris c.t. linalool, prefers
the sun and south exposed slopes. C.t. Thymol (the chemo-type we sell) has excellent
bronchopulmonary properties and is ideal for treating colds, coughs, sore
throats, bronchitis, whooping cough and asthma.
GEO-TYPE: As a result of
environmental factors, sometimes a particular area will produce a superior
quality of oil. The oil is then known by the area it comes from. E.g. Rose Oil,
Bulgarian.
COMPLETE OR WHOLE: The oil should be from
a single distillation and should not be rectified (the distilling of an oil a
second time to remove unwanted constituents). In some cases this is acceptable.
E.g. Bergamot is rectified to remove its bergaptene and make it Non-phototoxic).
We ensure that we indicate this on the product.
ANALYSIS: We ensure all of our
oils have been tested using gas chromatography to analyse its chemical
constituents. This way, we can ensure that an oil conforms to the agreed
international standards in therapeutic grade essential oils.
ORGANIC: SOil
products are certified organic by BCS
Oko-Garantie GmbH Nuremberg, Germany. The organic certification is issued by an
independent third party (BCS), who inspects our farming and processing
facilities annually to ensure we meet strict organic requirements.

ABOUT
ORGANIC
What
is organic?
SOil products are certified
organic by BCS Oko-Garantie GmbH Nuremberg, Germany. The
organic certification is issued by an independent third party (BCS), who
inspects our farming and processing facilities to ensure we meet strict organic
requirements.
Organic
products are farmed and processed without the use of chemicals such as
pesticides and fertilisers. This produces nutrient rich, fertile soil, which
nourishes the plants by keeping chemicals off the land and protecting water
quality, plant life and wildlife.
The
hazards for human health of consuming products contaminated by harmful
agricultural toxins like pesticides include; increased risks of cancer,
reproductive problems and neurological damage.
Organic
farming ensures that the end product is free of many of the residual toxins
that find their way into conventional natural products. Comforting to know when
you consider that 60% of what you put onto your skin is absorbed into your
body!
The
challenges of organic farming
Organic
farming can be challenging. Yields can be very variable because the farmer
cannot intervene artificially in the growing process. Not using pesticides and
herbicides means it is also labour intensive. It is more expensive since the
start up costs and costs of yearly certification can be quite high. Many
farmers starting out in organic farming also have to undergo a period of
conversion, where they cannot use chemicals on their land for a certain number
of years, so as to clear the land of toxins before the certifiers will grant
organic status. As you can imagine, this causes lower yields, yet the farmer is
unable to charge a higher price for his product because at this point it is not
yet certified as organic.
What
are the organic standards?
The
organic logo on our aromatherapy and skin care products means that at least 95%
of the ingredients in the product you are buying are certified organic.
How do
you know it is really organic?
Unlike
the food industry, there is no license on the use of the word "organic" in
health and beauty care. Anybody can write organic on their skin care label.
There are many products on the market which claim to be organic. The reality is
that unless a product is certified organic you cannot be sure whether it is
truly organic. All SOil products are certified
organic by BCS Oko-Garantie GmbH Nuremberg, Germany.
Who
are BCS?
BCS
is an independent and private controlling agency, operating since 1992, which
certifies organic products worldwide in accordance with international
regulations and private standards. They are based in
Germany
with representing agencies in 4 continents; Africa,
America,
Asia and
Europe. They are also a member of
IFOAM (International Federation of Organic Agricultural Movements), an umbrella
group for all organic certifiers worldwide.
The
BCS logo appears on the labels of our certified organic products and is your
guarantee.
COSMETIC INGREDIENTS
Why do
our products work?
Our Organic aromatherapy and skin care ranges have
been formulated with high quality organically certified ingredients, known for
their beneficial properties and effective action on the skin. Specially selected essential oils have been
chosen primarily for their therapeutic qualities as well as their precious and
unique fragrances.
Behind
the Label
After analysing almost 3000 ingredients
commonly used in personal care products and cosmetics, The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health found that 884 were
known to be toxic, 13 of which are the same chemicals used in industry and
commonly used in cosmetics products. We take time to read the labels on the foods we eat so we
should also be wise enough to read the labels on the skin care products we use.
SOiL products contain:
Some common chemicals used in
commercial skin cosmetics and why we donât use them in SOiL products:
Aqua
Aqua
or water usually forms the major component in most toiletries and as a result
usually appears first in the ingredients listing. It is a cheap way to thin or
bulk a product out. Since water is also an ideal medium in which bacteria can
grow it also requires a large amount of preservatives to keep the product from
contamination.
We use ingredients because they
are natural and effective, not because they are cheap. Where water is required
in any of our products we prefer to use the plant hydrosol instead thereby
imparting the properties of the plant into the product at the same time.
Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS)
Sodium
Lauryl Sulphate and its ethoxylated version Sodium Laureth Sulphate are
detergents commonly used in shampoos, shower gels, soaps and toothpastes. They
work by breaking the surface tension of the skin, emulsifying and stripping off
the skins oil layer thus taking dirt with it when washed away.
This chemical compound started out
as an industrial degreaser and garage floor cleaner. It is a known skin
irritant and has been shown to cause problems particularly with eye tissue. We
do not use SLS in any of our products.
Mineral oils
Mineral
oil (liquid paraffin) or liquid petrolatum are by-products in the distillation
of petroleum to produce gasoline. It is produced in huge volumes and is a low
value oil, thus a popular ingredient in moisturising products. It is marketed
as baby oil when fragrances and other ingredients are added.
Mineral oil is a synthetic
emollient that cannot be synthesised by the skin and causes pore blockage due
to the size of its molecules compared to those of natural plant oils. We do not
use petroleum based ingredients in any of our products. Instead of mineral oils
we use natural plant oils in our products. These are similar to the skinâs own
sebum and contain vitamins, anti-oxidants and essential fatty acids, to support
and condition the skin.
Parabens
Parabens
are a group of chemicals widely used as preservatives in the cosmetics and
pharmaceutical industries. They can be
found in shampoos, commercial moisturizers, shaving gels, cleansing gels,
personal lubricants, topical pharmaceuticals and toothpaste. They are also used
as food preservatives.
In
recent years parabens has had negative press after researchers found traces of
this chemical in tissue taken from women with breast cancer. While there is no
evidence to prove that parabens cause cancer, it is thought they may have an
estrogenic effect in the body. We do not used parabens in our products. Instead
we used natural preservatives such as vitamin E and package our products in
brown containers to reduce the amount of UV that can affect the product.
Colourings
Synthetics
colourants are used in the production of commercial cosmetics and are skin
irritants.
If our products are coloured, this
comes from the natural colours of the plant based ingredients. We feel that
synthetic colourings are unnecessary and possibly harmful. We do not use them.
Parfum
International
cosmetic labelling laws only require a productâs fragrance components to be
listed to as "parfum". Many synthetic and potentially harmful ingredients can
be hidden behind this word.
We list every individual
ingredient in our products and have no need for synthetic fragrance as the
essential oils that we choose for their therapeutic actions already lend their
amazing aromas to our products.
Silicones
These
ingredients are increasingly used in toiletries to create slip and impart a
silky feeling of the product on the skin or hair. They work by clinging to the
skinâs surface and creating a coating that can block pores and reduce the skinâs
natural ability to breathe and detoxify. They are listed as Dimethicone,
Dimethicone copolyol etc.
We do not use silicones. With such gorgeous textures
available from nature we do not feel it necessary to use silicones in our
products.
