The Hardy Hoodia Plant
- Although cultivated in different parts of the
country, Hoodia naturally found in the arid Kalahari desert
- It is a leafless succulent, and has saucer
like pale purple flowers, which smell of carrion, for pollination purposes
- The plant was initially used by the san
people as a food source and to control hunger on long trips
- It is used nowadays as a an appetite
suppressant by the weight loss industry
- The P57 molecule mimics the effect of glucose
molecules and therefore fools the brain into thinking the body has eaten,
resulting in a curbed appetite
- The fleshy part of the stem is used in the
making of Hoodia products, alternatively th raw material can be consumed to the
same effect creating much the same effect but adding the
bitter sweet taste of Hoodia in the mouth.
